Erectile Dysfunction Information

Erectile Dysfunction Cause, Treatment, Medication

Male erectile dysfunction (impotence), also referred to as "ED," is a medical term that describes the repeated inability to achieve and or maintain an erect penis adequate for sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction disorder is one of the most common sexual problems for men and the percentage of men with this problem increases with age. An estimated 15 to 25 million American men suffer from erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction has many causes, most of which are treatable, and it is not an inevitable consequence of aging. Doctors once believed that erectile dysfunction was an emotional or psychological issue alone. But awareness of ED has been growing and today they know that physical factors are just as important as psychological ones, such as disease, injury, or side effects of drugs. As a result, more men have been seeking treatment and returning to normal sexual activity.

Anatomy of the Penis

The internal structure of the penis contains two cylinder-shaped chambers called the corpora cavernosa. Filled with spongy tissue containing smooth muscles, fibrous tissue, veins and arteries, these chambers run the length of the organ and are surrounded by a membrane cover called the tunica albuginea. The urethra, the channel for which urine and ejaculate exit the body, runs along the underside of the corpora cavernosa and is surrounded by the corpus spongiosum. The longest part of the penis is the shaft, at the end of which is the head, or glans penis. The opening at the tip of the glans, which allows for urination and ejaculation, is the meatus.

Erection begins with physical or psychological stimulation (arousal). Impulses from the brain, nerves, blood vessels, and hormones cause the muscles around the corpora cavernosa to relax, allowing blood to fill the organ’s tiny open spaces. The blood creates pressure in the corpora cavernosa, making the penis firm and elongated. The final result is an erection. When stimulation finally ends, usually after ejaculation, pressure inside the penis decreases as the muscles contract. The blood empties from the corpora cavernosa through the veins of the penis and it returns to its normal shape and size.

Erectile Dysfunction Treatment

A physical examination can give clues to systemic problems and help find the right erectile dysfunction cure. Your doctor will evaluate your condition in order to determine if the cause is physical or emotional. History of illness, smoking, drug use and hypertension can be established with a thorough patient history. Doctors will also evaluate your medical history (current medications), get a detailed sexual history, give a physical exam and possibly order laboratory tests to identify the underlying cause.

Treatment of erectile dysfunction depends on the cause or causes. Most physicians suggest that treatments proceed from least to most invasive. For example, if caused by the medication you are taking, changing the medication or dosage may help. For some men, making a few healthy lifestyle changes may solve the problem. Stopping smoking, losing excess weight and increasing physical activity may help regain sexual function.

Psychotherapy and behavior modifications in selected patients may be considered. Oral medications, vacuum erection devices, cock rings, penile injection treatment, penile implants, urethral suppositories, sex therapy and surgically implanted devices may also help. In rare cases, surgery involving veins or arteries may be considered.

An ED drug may help with erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction medication includes Viagra, Levitra and Cialis. These three drugs belong to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors. They are to be taken 30 minutes to an hour before sexual activity and work by enhancing the effects of nitric oxide, a chemical that relaxes smooth muscles in the penis during stimulation and allows increased blood flow. None of these PDE inhibitors should be used more than once a day.

Erectile dysfunction medicine can be taken orally, injected directly into the penis, or inserted into the urethra at the tip of the penis. Many men achieve stronger erections by injecting drugs into the penis, causing it to become engorged with blood.

  • Cialis causes muscle aches in about 5% of patients.
  • Viagra and Levitra last about four to five hours in the bloodstream. Cialis stays in the bloodstream much longer (sometimes up to 36 hours) and can therefore be effective more than a day.

  • Levitra is largely unaffected by alcohol consumption
